Concrete common bricks, Lightweight Fixing bricks, Coloured Common Bricks and Engineering Commons have been manufactured at our Ranskill Works since 1985. During the early part of 2008 a £2,000,000 capital investment project was undertaken and the old Henke GK1200 block machine was replaced with a fully automated Columbia CPM60 Block machine with Penta Handling and Packing plant.
The new plant produces 51 bricks per layer and 1 layer every 9 seconds which gives us a production capacity of 20,000 bricks per hour or 750,000 per week on a single shift. Target production on all brick types is currently 20 million bricks per annum. The remaining production capacity for the plant is utilised in the manufacture of Wallstone parent blocks.
The new plant incorporates a state of the art product curing system. The blocks and bricks are stored in a curing hall, (with the capacity to hold 2560 boards or 130,000 bricks), where a CDS air conditioning system circulates and maintains the temperature and humidity at preset levels. This conditioning of the curing air increases the curing speed of the concrete and also considerably reduces the risks of efflorescence. As a consequence the bricks are hard enough to handle after only 6 hours curing.
Tudorstone building materials are committed to reducing the impact of the production process on the environment. The investment in this new plant has enabled us to increase the use of reclaimed raw materials in the concrete used to manufacture our bricks. Crushed waste concrete from our walling stone manufacturing now forms 30% of the concrete mass, and the curing system has allowed us to introduce ground granulated blast furnace slag as 50% of the cementitious content as well. As a consequence of these steps our bricks are made from over 35% recycled materials.
The bricks are assembled into voided packs, 456 bricks in each pack, and are then secured by eight vertical and three horizontal polyester straps. The packs are then stretch wrapped in order to keep them dry, and are labelled up with date of manufacture and product type.
For 2009 we are introducing a new range of Frogged Concrete Common Bricks to complement the traditional solid commons. These will be available as 21Newton specification bricks, in both 65mm and 73mm course height format.
Stocks of over 500,000 are maintained at all times, which, subject to haulage availability, allows us to provide a 3 day service guarantee on all products. The concentration of manufacturing all products on one site brings the added advantage to our customers of delivering mixed loads of all products, (including our range of reconstituted walling stone and architectural cast stone), thereby minimising stocking levels of each product.
We can also supply coloured concrete common bricks
